Mount Bisoke – Mount Bisoke, also known as Visoke, is an active volcanic mountain in the Virunga Volcanoes of the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift.

It straddles the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the summit located in Rwanda. It lies approximately 35 km northeast of Goma town, which is adjacent to Lake Kivu.

Mount Bisoke is a stratovolcano whose last eruption occurred in August 1957. Mount Bisoke rises to over 3,711 m (12,175 ft) with a prominence of 581 m (1,906 ft).

Its coordinates are 1°27’39″S 29°28’54″E. The name “Mount Bisoke” is derived from two crater lakes, meaning “soaked with water.”

This great mountain not only provides scenic beauty to Rwanda but also plays a significant role in conservation efforts.

It serves as a habitat for several endangered species, including mountain gorillas and golden monkeys.
