Mountain Karisimbi – The word “Karisimbi” comes from “amasimbi,” a Kinyarwanda word meaning snow. Mount Karisimbi is a stratovolcano in the Virunga Mountains, lying on the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
During the dry season, from June to August, the mountain top is snow-capped.
Mount Karisimbi is unique and special, being the highest of the eight major mountains of the Virunga Volcanoes, at 4,507 meters (14,787 feet).
It is bordered by Mikeno to the north, Bisoke to the east, and Nyiragongo to the west, on the other side of the Rift Valley.
It is also the 11th highest mountain in Africa, with an elevation of 4,507 meters (14,787 feet), a prominence of 3,312 meters (10,866 feet), an isolation of 207 kilometers (129 miles), and coordinates of 1°30’30″S 29°26’42″E.
Its last eruption is said to have been in 8050 BCE.
Between Karisimbi and Bisoke lies the Karisoke Research Center, founded by Dian Fossey.
