Detailed 4-Day Rwanda Primates Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Kigali Airport to Volcanoes National Park
On arrival, your safari driver guide will pick you up from the Kigali airport and drive you to the home of the mountain gorillas, the Volcanoes national park located in the North of Rwanda.
You will have lunch en-route and then continue your journey up North, check in at your safari lodge for the night.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking – Volcanoes National Park
After an early breakfast, your tour driver will take you to the park head offices for briefing and then drive you to the starting point of the trekking trail.
Follow the ranger guide into the forest and start your gorilla trekking experience.
The trek can last anywhere from 2-7 hours depending on the location of mountain gorilla family you are trekking.
Spend a whole hour in a safe distance with the gorillas, getting to know more about them as you take pictures.
Return to your lodge for lunch and a relaxed leisure evening.
Day 3: Golden monkey trekking and Gorilla Guardians Village – Volcanoes National Park
Just like the previous day, today starts with an early breakfast, briefing and transfer to the trail head to start your golden monkey trekking experience.
In about 2-5 hours, you will be able to see the unique golden monkeys swinging from one bamboo tree to another. Look around for other primates like the vervet monkeys among others.
Return from the bamboo forest to your lodge for lunch, and later in the day, visit the former Iby’Iwacu village now known as the Gorilla Guardians village for a cultural tour.
Day 4: Dian Fossey Hike & Departure
The Dian Fossey hike takes about 1 and a half hours.
Dian Fossey was a primatologist who dedicated her entire life to researching and protecting the endangered mountain gorillas of the Virunga until she was sadly killed.
She lived among the gorillas in Karisoke research camp.
The Dian Fossey hike will give you an insight of the work done by the primatologist and you also get to see where she was buried next to her favorite gorilla and other gorillas that lost their lives as a result of poaching.
Return from the hike, have lunch and then transfer to Kigali for a drop off at the airport.
