Meet the Isimbi Gorilla Family in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park

Isimbi Gorilla Family – The Isimbi Gorilla Family is found in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda, and is led by the dominant silverback Muturengere.

The family was formed as a result of the split of the Karisimbi Gorilla Family on April 10, 2012, when the silverback Getty took the lead of the new group of 7 individuals.

Unfortunately, Getty later died on December 22, 2013, due to an abscess on his air sac and pneumonia.

After Getty’s death, the then young blackback Muturengere succeeded him, leading the group with the help of Poppy, an adult female.

Muturengere was very protective and fought with other groups that tried to grab members of his group.

Since then, the Ifvi Gorilla Family has registered great success and expanded from 7 to 22 individuals, including 1 silverback, 6 adult females, 1 sub-adult male, 3 sub-adult females, 5 juveniles, and 6 infants.
