Meet the Umubano Gorilla Family in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park

Meet the Umubano Gorilla Family in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park

Umubano Gorilla Family – The Umubano Gorilla Family resides in Volcanoes National Park. It is a mountain gorilla family that broke away from the Amahoro Gorilla Family after the two silverbacks, Ubumwe and Charles, could not get along, leading to the drastic decision of parting ways.

The word “Umubano” is derived from a local Kinyarwanda word that means “living together.”

The Umubano mountain gorilla family shares a territory with the Amahoro Gorilla Family.

The two gorilla groups are often seen interacting and living peacefully without fights, making the trekking experience even more interesting.

The Umubano Gorilla Family consists of 13 individuals, including 2 silverbacks, 3 adult females, 6 infants, and a sub-adult, forming a complete family.

However, the Umubano Gorilla Family is not the only gorilla family tourists can visit in Volcanoes National Park; there are also 9 other groups.
