Meet the Karisimbi Gorilla Family in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park

Karisimbi Gorilla Family

Karisimbi Gorilla Family – The Karisimbi Gorilla Family, also known as Susa B, lives in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda. It consists of 11 individuals, including 2 infants, 4 silverbacks, and adult females.

The group is led by a silverback named Ngagakanga, who initially led a group of 13 members known as Susa B before the name changed to Karisimbi in 2010.

The family members inhabit the highest peaks of the Virunga Mountains, specifically the slopes of Mount Karisimbi, hence their name, the Karisimbi Gorilla Family.

Due to constant fights in their original gorilla group, Susa A, the Karisimbi Gorilla group broke off, causing a bitter split that reduced the largest gorilla group from about 42 members to approximately 26 members, excluding the silverbacks.

Currently, the group has 11 members, including 1 adult female, 4 silverbacks, 1 blackback, and 2 infants. This group is also known to be the hardest to trek since they occupy areas near a caldera on Mount Karisimbi and sometimes climb to higher altitudes, making trekking close to impossible.

However, tourists who enjoy physical challenges often choose to trek the Karisimbi Gorilla Family regardless of the hardships they might encounter.
