Essential Gorilla Trekking Tips – Prepare for an Unforgettable Adventure

How to Survive Gorilla Attacks - Essential Safety Tips

Rwanda gorilla trekking tips – Explore the romantic and picturesque Virunga Mountains, where Dian Fossey conducted her pioneering research on gorillas.

Trek up and down the rain-forest and bamboo-covered slopes. Virunga is home to at least five volcanoes, and you’ll be taken deep into the park’s misty forests by an experienced ranger.

It usually takes about two to five hours to find your allocated family group of gorillas, and then you’ll have the chance to spend some quiet time watching these amazing creatures.

Defensive Tactics of Mountain Gorillas Against Predators

Here are some tips for enjoying a gorilla trekking safari

  • Hire a Porter (about $15 USD per trek). It’s not only a great way to create sustainable jobs in the community, but it’s also helpful to have someone carry your pack up steep slopes.
  • Be Polite when interacting with the gorillas. Be quiet and respectful. Remain calm and follow the instructions of your expert guide. The gorillas will not be disturbed by your presence.
  • Bring Plenty of Water and Energy Drinks. Your accommodation will provide these, but if there’s an energy snack you enjoy, it’s a good idea to bring it with you, as treks can last anywhere from an hour to two hours.
  • Local Stretchers or Sedan Chairs can be provided to the nearest point of observation if the terrain is too difficult for some guests. These must be reserved ahead of time at an additional fee.
  • For Photographers, since the gorillas are so close, long lenses are usually not the best choice (and they can be heavy to carry). A medium-zoom lens like 24-70 mm is a good choice. Keep in mind that the humidity in the area can cause the lenses to fog up. Flash photography is not permitted, so be sure to have the right light settings. Store your camera in a waterproof bag to prevent it from getting wet, and remember to charge the battery.

What to Wear When Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

  • Waterproof Walking Boots with ankle support are best, as traveling can be difficult at times.
  • Wear Layers. Start with a short-sleeved shirt on the upper body, as the humidity and heat in the mountains can make it difficult to keep dry. You can also wear a rain jacket or a waterproof poncho, as the rains come and go (some lodges provide these).
  • Avoid Bright Colors and White as these will clash with the natural colors of the forest and may disturb the gorillas. Camouflage clothing is also not recommended.
  • Wear Long, Lightweight Hiking Pants and long-sleeved lightweight shirts. There’s a lot of stinging vegetation along the way, and sometimes you’ll have to walk off-trail, so shorts aren’t ideal.
  • Gaiters or Socks Over Your Pants can help prevent sand and ants from entering your shoes.
  • Gloves may be helpful as you may need to clear long grass from your path. Walking poles or ski poles can be useful for more difficult terrain, and a hat and sunglasses are essential.

In a nutshell, following these tips will help you enjoy your safari comfortably and without distracting the mountain gorillas, ensuring a memorable gorilla trekking experience.
