Mountain Nyamuragira – Mountain Nyamuragira is located about 25 kilometers (16 miles) north of Lake Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
It derives its name from a Bantu dialect, “kuragira nyamu,” meaning “herd animals,” with “nyamu” meaning “animal” or “cows.”
It is also known as Mountain Nyamulagira.
Mountain Nyamuragira has been described as Africa’s most active volcano, having erupted over 40 times since 1885.
It belongs to the Virunga Mountains. Mountain Nyamuragira has an elevation of 3,058 meters (10,033 feet) with a prominence of 784 meters (2,572 feet) and coordinates 1°24’29″S 29°12’00″E.
It is a shield volcano. Its last eruption was recorded in April 2018.
