Are Mountain Gorillas Dangerous? Understanding Their Behavior

Roles of Gorillas in the Ecosystem - Key Contributions and Impact

Are Mountain Gorillas Dangerous? Mountain gorillas are wild animals, although they share 98% of their DNA with humans. Therefore, they should be treated as wild animals and highly respected.

However, mountain gorillas are generally very peaceful and only attack when they feel threatened.

In many instances, gorillas may have fights, but these are typically between fellow group members or members of different groups, not with humans.

Some circumstances under which gorillas fight include protecting their family or when another male attempts to mate with a Silverback’s females. In such cases, the males will fight.

As humans, we must understand that gorillas are incredibly strong animals, and it would take about five strong men to overpower one silverback gorilla.

Signs That Gorillas Are Angry:

  • Chest beating accompanied by a grunt or roar.
  • Vocalizations such as loud roars, grunts, or barks.
  • Stomping their feet, usually as a warning signal.
  • Rapid breathing.
  • Hair on their back and shoulders standing up.
  • Throwing vegetation or branches.
  • Standing upright.

What Provokes Mountain Gorillas?

  • When humans make a lot of noise that irritates them.
  • When humans come too close to them.
  • Food competition with other gorillas.
  • When humans try to scare them, they may become aggressive and aim for self-defense.
